Start with a consultation
Understand the difference

Different conditions.
Different treatments.

The retina is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Its central area, the macula, helps with detailed vision used for reading and recognizing faces.

Diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) can affect the retina in different ways. We offer medical evaluation, follow-up, and injection treatments when appropriate.

The right treatment depends on the diagnosis. Anti-VEGF medicines and SYFOVRE have different roles and are not interchangeable.

Medical retina at Beatific Vision

Care with a clear purpose.

Diabetic eye disease

Diabetic retinopathy

Diabetes can damage retinal blood vessels. Care may involve monitoring or treatment based on the findings. Anti-VEGF injections may be used for diabetic macular edema, swelling that affects central vision, and selected cases of diabetic retinopathy.

Wet age-related macular degeneration

Anti-VEGF injections

For wet AMD, anti-VEGF medicines target a signal that promotes abnormal blood-vessel growth and leakage. They may help protect vision; the response and ongoing treatment needs vary from person to person.

Geographic atrophy secondary to AMD

SYFOVRE

SYFOVRE (pegcetacoplan injection) is a different type of medicine for geographic atrophy, an advanced form of dry AMD. It can slow the growth of damaged retinal areas. It does not restore vision already lost and is not an anti-VEGF treatment for wet AMD.

An informed decision

Benefits, risks,
and follow-through.

Eye injections can have serious risks, including infection inside the eye, retinal detachment, inflammation, and increased eye pressure. Your clinician explains the risks relevant to the medicine and your eyes.

SYFOVRE also carries a risk of retinal inflammation or blocked retinal blood vessels that can cause severe vision loss, and it can increase the risk of developing wet AMD. A careful discussion and ongoing monitoring are essential. Read the full SYFOVRE prescribing information ↗.

Ask about the purpose of treatment, what change can reasonably be expected, alternatives, and how follow-up will be planned.

Clear answers, before you arrive

A few things you may be wondering.

Does every person with diabetic retinopathy need injections?

No. The findings, severity, and whether there is swelling or other sight-threatening disease guide treatment. Your clinician will explain whether monitoring or treatment is appropriate.

Are injections for wet AMD and geographic atrophy the same?

No. Anti-VEGF injections treat abnormal blood-vessel growth and leakage in wet AMD. SYFOVRE is a complement inhibitor used to slow the growth of geographic atrophy secondary to AMD. They have different purposes and risks.

Will treatment bring back vision I have lost?

Results depend on the disease and the condition of your retina. Some treatments may stabilize or improve vision, but no result is guaranteed. SYFOVRE slows geographic atrophy growth; it does not restore lost vision.

What if I notice a sudden change in vision?

Sudden vision loss, new flashes or many new floaters, a curtain or shadow, or significant eye pain needs urgent professional assessment. After an injection, promptly contact your treating clinician for new pain, redness, light sensitivity, or decreased vision. Do not wait for a website response.
