What it is
Age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, affects the macula and can interfere with reading, recognizing faces, and other detailed tasks. Dry AMD involves changes and thinning in this central retinal tissue. Geographic atrophy, or GA, is an advanced form with areas of retinal cell loss. Wet AMD involves abnormal, leaking blood vessels and can cause faster vision changes. 1 · 2
What you may notice first
Early AMD may have no symptoms. Later signs include needing more light, blurred central vision, difficulty recognizing faces, or a blank patch when reading. Straight lines may appear bent or wavy. A new change in the center of your vision deserves prompt attention. 1
How it is diagnosed
A dilated eye examination and retinal imaging help identify the type and stage. OCT checks the retinal layers and looks for fluid. Your doctor may recommend checking vision at home with an Amsler grid, one eye at a time, but home checks do not replace office examinations. 1 · 3
Treatment depends on the type
- Earlier dry AMD: Monitoring, avoiding smoking, and healthy habits remain important. AREDS2 supplements are appropriate for some stages; they are not a general-purpose prevention vitamin for everyone. Discuss the correct formulation and medication interactions with your clinician.
- Wet AMD: Anti-VEGF eye injections reduce abnormal blood-vessel leakage and help preserve vision. Repeated treatment is commonly needed, with the interval based on the eye’s response.
- Geographic atrophy: Complement-inhibitor injections such as SYFOVRE can slow the enlargement of atrophic areas. They do not regrow lost retinal tissue or restore vision already lost. The benefit must be weighed against treatment burden and risks.
- Living with reduced vision: Vision rehabilitation, magnification, lighting changes, and other aids can help with everyday activities.
Understanding SYFOVRE
Beatific Vision offers SYFOVRE evaluation for GA caused by AMD. It is a different treatment from anti-VEGF therapy for wet AMD. Risks include infection inside the eye, retinal detachment, inflammation, increased eye pressure, and development of wet AMD. Retinal blood-vessel inflammation or blockage has also been reported and can cause severe vision loss. Discuss whether the expected slowing of GA growth is worthwhile for your situation. 6
When to seek urgent care
Report new waviness, a new central dark spot, or a sudden drop in vision immediately. After an injection, worsening pain, redness, light sensitivity, or decreased vision also requires urgent contact with your treating clinician. 1 · 6
